President’s Corner

My dear friends and members,

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all still clinging to your New Year's resolutions.

According to Prevention magazine what most people over the age of 45 desire is not wealth, not beauty, but health.  I'm really not surprised at all.

Since all of our membership are over the age of 45, I'd like to share some important health tips.

Did you know that studies have shown people who volunteer 1 to 2 hours per week are healthier, live longer and are more satisfied with their lives than nonvolunteers? (Prevention)

Did you you that after studying a group of individuals over a five year period proved that

volunteers had a 44% lower risk of dying than

nonvolunteers? (Prevention)

Did you know a study of 3,300 volunteers found that 95% of them experienced the "helper's high" --

a surge of energy along with a feeling of euphoria?

(Treasury of Health Secrets)

This must be much like the "runner's high" that runners experience.

Did you know that while volunteering you form strong social bonds with others? (Age Erasers for Women)

Yes, cutting out bad fats, exercising, and limiting

your intake of food is all necessary for good health, but volunteering is too.

SO VOLUNTEER IT'S GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"LET'S WORK TOGETHER"

Love and Friendship,

Linda Anne Valentino

President Elect ~ Audrey Lyle

My thanks to those who donated to the Active Duty Soldiers in Afghanistan. We received a thank you card from my niece who is now there. She wants us all to know how important the gifts are to them. Many of the soldiers there do not hear from home at all.  When they opened the box with the blankets,

they all went nuts! They held a lottery to see who got them, so far we have sent 14, but could sure have sent more, it is cold there now, and all of them want one.  She sent a web site video to her mother and in it was a bunch of them wearing the helmet liners, we sent 24 of them but could still use more of them too!

They could also use is gloves. You can buy them 2 to a dollar and they look small but can also be for adults.  What they use them for is mostly for the children in Afghanistan. They throw them from the tank, one little girl got a set but had only 1 arm and couldn't put it on. So they put it on her and held it by a rubber band.  They also try to throw them candy or  anything they could use. There are 9 girls in her unit and they could also use body wipes (they can go out for 2 days and no way of taking a shower) and that helps especially that time of the month, Chap stick is also a favorite. But we are not being picky, all the things you have sent has been shared among them, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioners, floss, lotions, body scrubs, dried soups or drinks etc have all been wonderful.

One thing she told me was that these soldiers think the women who made the blankets and helmet liners and sent the supplies are the heroes right now and it all is truly appreciated. So keep them coming! Due to random shipping of soldiers their whole platoon is not yet there but are coming all the time, she said when they all get there we will receive a thank you card signed by all of them.

Education

By Susan DeRoche, Co-Chairman

Annual Education Report Complete!  I would like to thank everyone who completed the survey for the Education Committee.  The 54 members who responded assisted me in reporting xxx education hours to the state.

We Got The Grant!  I am pleased to report that we received the grant from GFWC International for the baby literacy bags!  A check for $150 came in the mail; it funded over half the cost of the project!

Baby Literacy Bags Distributed!  In December, members of the committee, DIANE BUSCH, ANGIE FASOLO, CAROL MAPLETHORPE, DOROTHY VOLKERT, and me, SUE DeROCHE, assembled 50 bags.  This year we contacted local preschools and asked that they distribute them to their parents of toddlers, as well as expectant mothers.  The bags were cute, and very informative with regard to preschool literacy!

Busy Days Ahead!  In the next couple of months we will be busily involved with the high school…reading scholarships and awaiting information on Senior honors and Sophomore representatives to the Leadership Seminar.

Epsilon Sigma Omicron:  ESO is a way to have your personal reading benefit our club!  All you have to do is make note of all the books you read on the recording sheets according to categories of your own choice.  (My categories have included such things as stories about women, books taking place in locations that I have visited, human interest stories; you can see that you can be very liberal with your categories!  Be creative!)  This year I even have a category called books recommended by friends.  When you finish four sheets, each sheet a separate category of book, do this:  1) Make a copy of them for your own records.  2) Send your original packet of four sheets (20 books) to Neva Boyce, 9104 Vine Ave, Wonder Lake IL 60097. 3) Let me know that you have sent them so that our club can get credit for you!  Just ask Marlene Fernandez or me for a form.  Please join  MARY BAELER, LINDA BAKULA, DIANE BUSCH, PAT GOONE, FRAN GROFF, MARGE HEDDENS, SUSIE LANCASTER, NORMA LUCANSKY, AUDREY LYLE, CAROL MAPLETHORPE, DORIS MILLER, ALLENE NELSON, PAT SMITH, LINDA VALENTINE, and me, SUSAN DEROCHE, and become a member of ESO, and…enjoy!  (If I missed anyone, please let me know.  It is difficult to keep track!)

***PLEASE NOTE…A new recording sheet has been provided to us.  If you are in the midst of recording your books on the old sheets, PLEASE INCLUDE THE AUTHOR’S NAME WITH EACH SEPARATE BOOK ENTRY.  When you need more forms, you may get the new ones from Marlene Fernandez or on line.***

BOXTOPS AND SOUP LABELS:  Thank you to all members who turned in Boxtops for Education and Campbell’s soup labels.  They are redeemable for valuable equipment for the school’s use.  Please note…For Campbell’s products, only submit only UPC symbols and jar lids!

Bibliophile's Corner

 Marlene Fernandez, Literature Chairman

Our book club is very special with very special women!

All of our readers are interested in education, exchanging ideas, outlooks on life and books. We may not always agree but respect each others different interests.  We had a couple of challenges like what restaurant to go to and what to order for lunch, to name a couple, but solved all that by holding our meetings at the senior center and bringing a bag lunch or on special occasions

pot luck. Our Christmas pot luck was spectacular! Those are the best. I'm looking forward to February Valentine's Day Sweet table. The following month’s agenda will be diet books!  Let me also mention our last Annual July picnic. Call it afternoon delight! Tons of books and food, what could beat that!

We have added a new segment to our meeting by adding an in-depth book review by one of our volunteer members. They may choose any book they want (vintage or recent) editions. Part of the interest is in how the book made them feel at the time, along with the story. FEELINGS matter.  We continue to have a short synopsis of each book we want to pass on.

So as we all try and survive this frigid weather let's light the fire, light a candle, get a blanket and a good book and curl up in a comfy chair. Don't forget the glass of wine or cup of tea! You deserve it.

Your Bridge Committee

Audrey Lyle, Fran Groff, Jean Haling

Thank you to Marge Heddens for compiling the mid term report.

HOSTESS DUTIES

1. Each hostess committee has two head hostesses.  It is their job to contact all the women on their committee and assign them whatever jobs are necessary.  The hostess committee may pick a “theme” for the refreshment table unless the officers have a “specific” theme in mind.  The hostess committee supplies refreshments, coffee, tea, sugar, cream, plastic cups, napkins, dishwashing soap, towels etc.  There are some supplies i.e. table clothes and coffee carafes, if needed.

2. Chairs and head table will be set up in Senior Center.  Hostesses will set up refreshment and reception tables.

3. The head hostesses assign a hostess to give the “Thought for the Day.”  They are to inform the president who will be doing this.  This is given at every meeting.  If the meeting is a luncheon, another hostess is to give the “Blessing.”  The president is to be informed of this person’s name.

4. Coffee makers are available for our use in the kitchen.

5. It is the responsibility of the Hostess Committee to clean up after the meeting.

6. The head hostesses will calculate the amount owed by each hostess for coffee, tea, plates etc.  It is also expected that each hostess assigned to a certain month, attend the meeting that month to carry out her duties.  If she is unable to attend she should switch duties with someone else on another month.

World Wide Web Report

The Antioch Woman's Club website is updated every quarter with our newsletter.  Please be sure to check it out at www.antiochwomansclub.org

Our state website is updated very frequently with news and all the forms for events that are going on in the state.  Our latest addition is news of our Spring Regional Meeting and Legislation Day.  Look for information about the Blue Ribbon Fashion Show very soon. Please go to www.gfwcillinois.org

The International GFWC.org website has a brand new feature that should be of great interest to members in Illinois, and AWC especially.  A Blog of 14 Clubwomen has been started at www.imaclubwoman.org.  You can find this link right on the front page of the GFWC.org site.  A blog is like a diary, but readers are invited to participate by posting comments to the entries.  Some of the posts will be about assigned subjects, some will just be the opinions and issues important to the bloggers.  Three Illinois women have been chosen among the 14 internationally.  And I have been chosen as one of them.

Our first assignment was to write about our mentor for National Mentoring Month, which is January.  I wrote a short entry about Mabel Lou Weber.  I could not possibly cover all the fascinating things about our favorite State Public Affairs Chairman and Musician, as we were limited to about 300 words.

I invite the members of Antioch Woman's Club to visit the website and add your own stories about Mabel Lou.

Our 10th District now has a website too.  Featured on the front page are photos from the meetings.  There is also a convenient calendar of District events.  You can find that site at www.10thdistrict.gfwcillinois.org or you can go the state site and follow the link on the "Related Links" button.
